Peepshow Collective

George introduced us to Peepshow Collective in our elective workshop. They showcase a large variety of animation, both 2D and 3D, with a range of techniques used. Using a mix of computer generated animation (i.e. vector graphics on Illustrator or 3D models) and more traditionally drawn animation, which brings with it textures and rawness.
One of my favourite samples of their work is their project with PBS' six part series How We Got To Now. They animated over 70 sequences that weave within the series and really illuminate Steven Johnson's narration. I could definitely see this style of animating working for the RSA brief, as it could be put together fairly quickly and illustrates the text very well.

Similarly to the previous film, this also appears to be made up of scanned in/drawn shapes and lines that are then rigged or moved around in After Effects, which is a good, fast alternative to frame by frame animation. I like the amount of texture and colour, but I really enjoy frame by frame animation despite the work that has to go into it. I am also looking to do more character animation, so would probably include more figures.

This film for MS Society once again highlights the impact of computer generated motion graphics combined with organic textures. These animations have made me think about ways I can utilise computer software to speed up my process, but I will have to consider how I can produce hand drawn animation without spending too long on it.
